The Superconducting Levitated Dipole Experiment (LDX)

چکیده
The Levitated Dipole Experiment (LDX) explores the physics of high-temperature plasmas confined by a dipole magnetic field. Stable high-beta plasma has been created and confined by the magnetic field of a superconducting coil. Discharges containing trapped electrons form when microwaves cause strong perpendicular heating at cyclotron resonance. To eliminate the losses to the supports, the magnetic dipole (a superconducting solenoid) will be magnetically levitated for several hours. The dipole magnetic field is generated by a Nb3Sn floating Coil (F-coil), a maximum field of 5.3 T, operating for up to 2 hours. A NbTi charging coil (C-coil) surrounds a portion of the vacuum chamber and induces the current in the floating coil. After the F-coil is lifted to the center of the chamber, the Levitation Coil (L-coil), made from high temperature superconductor, magnetically supports it. In the first year of operation, the device has been operated in a supported mode of operation while experience has been gained in the cryogenic performance of the F-coil and the integration of the F-coil and C-coil. Current work focuses on the integration of the F and L coils in preparation for first levitation tests.

The Levitated Dipole Experiment (LDX) is an innovative approach to explore the magnetic confinement of a fusion plasma offering the possibility of an improved fusion power source. In this concept, a magnetic dipole (a superconducting solenoid) is magnetically levitated for several hours at the center of a 5 m diameter, 3 m tall vacuum chamber. The Floating coil (F-coil) is designed for a maximu...

The Levitated Dipole Experiment (LDX) is used to study hightemperature plasma confined by the magnetic field produced by a high-current superconducting ring. Multiple-frequency ECRH heats and sustains plasma discharges for long, quasi-steady periods, and conditions of high plasma beta are reached by adjusting the rate of neutral fueling. When the superconducting ring is levitated by attraction ...

In the initial phases of the Levitated Dipole Experiment (LDX), multiple frequency ECRH (with frequencies between 2.45 and 28 GHz) will be used to produce a population of energetic electrons at high-β. Use of multiple frequency ECRH in mirror experiments have shown a reduction in plasma turbulence and increased heating efficiency. The pressure profile will be controlled by adjusting the relativ...

Background The Levitated Dipole Experiment (LDX) at MIT uses a floating donut-shaped supercon-ducting magnet to study the confinement of plasma in a dipole magnetic field. LDX created its first plasma in 2004 and first levitated its su-perconducting magnet in 2007. Compared to the more popular tokamak, first used to create plasma in the 1960s, LDX is a relatively new device. Despite this, there...
متن کاملPressure profiles of plasmas confined in the field of a magnetic dipole
Equilibrium pressure profiles of plasmas confined in the field of a dipole magnet are reconstructed using magnetic and x-ray measurements on the levitated dipole experiment (LDX). LDX operates in two distinct modes: with the dipole mechanically supported and with the dipole magnetically levitated. When the dipole is mechanically supported, thermal particles are lost along the field to the suppo...
